Marc-André ter Stegen Breaks Silence on Barcelona Rift After Losing Captaincy
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has issued an official statement addressing recent tensions with the club following reports of a fallout over his injury recovery and the loss of his captain’s armband.
The German international, who underwent back surgery earlier this year, has reportedly been at odds with Barcelona’s management after refusing to sign off on his medical report, which the club intended to submit to La Liga. This report was key to potentially freeing up part of his salary to register new signings while he remains sidelined.
In a lengthy post shared on his official social media accounts, Ter Stegen set out his version of events, describing the last few months as both “physically and personally” challenging.
Ter Stegen’s side of the story
“These past few months have been particularly difficult for me, both physically and personally. Like any player, after suffering an injury, my sole priority has always been to return to the pitch as soon as possible, motivated only by the desire to help the team and do what I love most: compete.
In recent weeks, many things have been said about me, some of them completely unfounded. Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, but clearly.
The decision to undergo surgery was made after consultation with medical professionals and fully approved by the club, always with the intention of prioritizing my health and long-term sporting career—goals that are, of course, completely aligned with those of FC Barcelona—in order to be available in the best possible condition to help the team.
The minimum recovery period I would require was publicly announced, and I was informed by experts after reviewing and discussing all options with the club. I would also like to make it clear, following certain speculation, that all the decisions I have made since my injury at the club were made by mutual agreement, including surgical ones. No treatments have ever been performed without prior consent, nor have any unilateral decisions been made, nor have I failed to meet established deadlines.
I deeply respect the club’s values and understand the importance of transparency, which is why it pains me that many people doubt my commitment and professionalism based on incomplete or inaccurate information.”
Continuing his message, the 32-year-old reaffirmed his loyalty to the club:
“Throughout my career, I’ve always strived to demonstrate professionalism, respect, and commitment to all my teammates. I have a deep affection for FC Barcelona, my colleagues, and the fans, who have always supported me through thick and thin. My commitment to these colours is unquestionable.
I understand that all recovery processes take time. I trust that, through my effort and dedication, I will be able to once again help the team to the fullest extent, without a trace of pain, in all the goals we have ahead of us. Furthermore, I reiterate my willingness to collaborate in this matter and facilitate the required authorization. Many things can change, but there is one thing that never will: I love you, culers!”
The ongoing dispute
According to reports from Spain, Barcelona’s medical staff estimate that Ter Stegen will be sidelined for around four months, with his return expected early next year. The club is believed to be seeking to use his temporary absence to free up wage space for registering new players, while Ter Stegen remains optimistic that his recovery will be much faster, potentially returning to action before the end of 2025.
The situation has created an unusual tension between one of Barcelona’s longest-serving players and the club’s hierarchy, at a time when the Catalan giants are preparing for another demanding campaign under Hansi Flick.
