Manchester United Receive Major Boost Ahead of Arsenal Clash as Andre Onana Returns to Training

Manchester United have been handed a timely lift ahead of their 2025/26 Premier League opener against Arsenal, with the return of first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana to full training.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper, who has been out of action for nearly a month after sustaining an injury during a training session, was spotted working with his teammates at Carrington on Monday, August 11, 2025. His comeback provides Erik ten Hag’s side with renewed optimism as they prepare for one of the season’s most anticipated opening fixtures.

Onana, who arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan in the summer of 2022, has endured a mixed spell in Manchester, drawing criticism from sections of the fanbase for inconsistent performances. Nonetheless, his return is a significant boost to United’s defensive stability.

To aid his return to competitive action, Manchester United are reportedly arranging a behind-closed-doors friendly, giving both Onana and new signing Benjamin Šeško an opportunity to get match sharpness under conditions similar to competitive play. The match will also serve to fine-tune their fitness levels and restore confidence ahead of the season’s curtain-raiser.

While Onana’s recovery is welcome news, the club still face several injury setbacks. Lisandro Martínez remains sidelined, having been out since February 2025 with a long-term issue, and is yet to rejoin full training.

Noussair Mazraoui is also unavailable after picking up a knock; the Moroccan defender played in the pre-season opener against Leeds in Stockholm but was substituted at half-time and missed the club’s US tour.

Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee has yet to feature for United this pre-season due to an undisclosed injury sustained before the USA tour. Although he traveled with the squad, the Dutch forward was unable to take part in any training sessions during the trip.

With their Premier League campaign set to kick off, Manchester United will be hoping Onana’s return marks the start of a broader injury recovery trend within the squad.
