Manchester United midfielder reportedly set to join Napoli

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could be on his way out of Old Trafford when the January transfer window opens, with reports suggesting a potential move to Serie A champions Napoli.

The young English international had previously expressed his desire to leave Manchester United during the summer transfer window due to limited game time. However, the club reportedly refused to grant his request, hoping he would stay and fight for his place. Since the start of the 2025/26 season, Mainoo’s lack of minutes has become a growing concern for his camp, prompting renewed interest in seeking opportunities elsewhere — with Napoli emerging as his most likely destination.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte is believed to be a strong admirer of the 20-year-old midfielder. Conte reportedly views Mainoo as an ideal fit for his system — a dynamic, intelligent player capable of bringing creativity and balance to the midfield.

For Mainoo, the move could represent the perfect chance to rejuvenate his career, offering consistent first-team football and an opportunity to learn alongside Kevin De Bruyne, who joined Napoli earlier this season. The presence of his former Manchester United teammate Scott McTominay could also help him settle quickly in Italy.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, several young players are prioritizing regular playing time to boost their chances of national team selection. Mainoo’s continued absence from United’s starting lineup could hurt his World Cup hopes, making a January transfer increasingly appealing.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also monitoring Mainoo’s situation closely. Both Premier League sides could offer him valuable domestic playing time should he decide to remain in England. However, Napoli currently lead the race for his signature, and the allure of Serie A football — combined with the chance to work under Conte — might prove too tempting to resist.
