Real Madrid Captain Luka Modric Announces Departure After Club World Cup

Real Madrid captain Luka Modric has officially announced that he will be leaving the club following the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Croatian midfielder confirmed that his final appearance at the Santiago Bernabéu will be on Saturday, May 24, 2025, when Real Madrid faces Real Sociedad in their last La Liga match of the season. On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Modric shared an emotional farewell message with fans via his official Instagram account.

Despite spending much of the season on the bench, Modric made 34 appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists. He remains a football legend, being the first player since 2007—aside from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi—to win the Ballon d’Or.

In his heartfelt message, Modric said:

“The moment has come. A moment I hoped would never arrive, but such is football—and life—everything has a beginning and an end. I joined in 2012 with the dream of wearing the jersey of the greatest club in the world and the ambition to achieve big things. But I never imagined what was to come. Playing for Real Madrid transformed my life both professionally and personally. I am honored to have been part of one of the most glorious eras in this club’s history.”

Modric’s Trophy Haul at Real Madrid

Over 13 remarkable seasons, Luka Modric won a total of 28 trophies with Real Madrid:

  • 6 UEFA Champions League titles

  • 6 FIFA Club World Cups

  • 5 UEFA Super Cups

  • 4 La Liga titles

  • 2 Copa del Rey titles

  • 5 Spanish Super Cups

Modric also ranks as the third-longest-serving player currently in La Liga, following Athletic Club’s Oscar de Marcos and Atlético Madrid’s Koke.
