Lionel Messi left Inter Miami CF’s MLS clash against Philadelphia Union on Monday morning, May 25, with a muscle issue, raising serious concern ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to beIN Sports.

With less than 20 days remaining before the start of the tournament, the sight of Argentina’s captain leaving the pitch immediately triggered anxiety among fans in Miami and within the national team camp.

Although Messi once again played a decisive role in Inter Miami’s victory, the Argentine star requested to be substituted in the 73rd minute after feeling discomfort believed to be related to a muscle problem.

Concern increased even further when Messi failed to remain on the bench after his substitution. Instead, the World Cup winner walked directly to the dressing room while holding the back of his left leg, sparking fears about the severity of the issue.

The concern surrounding Messi has become impossible to ignore as he prepares for what is expected to be the sixth World Cup appearance of his legendary career, a feat achieved by very few footballers in history.

However, the physical demands of his long career and recurring muscle problems in recent seasons have raised fresh doubts about his fitness ahead of football’s biggest competition.

Inside Argentina’s camp, there is a clear understanding that despite the country’s wealth of talent, Messi’s influence on and off the pitch remains irreplaceable in Lionel Scaloni’s squad.

That is why any injury concern involving the reigning world champion instantly creates tension across the country.

Argentina national football team heads into the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the favourites to retain the trophy after lifting the title in Qatar in 2022.

With stars such as Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martínez, Argentina possesses one of the strongest squads in the competition.

Still, Messi’s leadership, experience, and match-winning quality remain central to the team’s ambitions.

The possibility of the Argentine captain arriving at the World Cup less than fully fit would represent a massive setback for a nation hoping to successfully defend its world title.
