‘I’m still charge’: Augustine Eguavoen Denies Stepping Down as Interim Super Eagles Coach

Austin Eguavoen has refuted claims that he resigned as the interim coach of the Super Eagles following the two 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen was appointed by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to oversee the matches after the federation’s failed attempt to secure German coach Bruno Labbadia.

The 59-year-old guided the Super Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, last Saturday, but the team was held to a goalless draw in Kigali against Rwanda on Tuesday.

Following the draw, rumors surfaced suggesting Eguavoen had stepped down, but he quickly denied these reports ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON qualifying double-header against Libya next month.

“It’s unfortunate that people spread false stories. We don’t need negativity right now,” Eguavoen said in a media interview upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

He clarified his position, explaining, “I only mentioned that after these two games, we would sit with the federation to discuss the next steps. But I was concerned when I saw the resignation rumor. It’s simply not true. I’m still in charge as Technical Director of the NFF, tasked with leading the Super Eagles at this time.”
