Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has affirmed that the Ikwerre people will continue to play a significant role in Nigerian politics, insisting that they are an influential force that cannot be ignored.

Speaking on Sunday evening, December 28, during a special Christmas visit to his supporters in Emohua Local Government Area at the palace of His Royal Highness, Ohna Sergent Awuse, Wike emphasized the enduring political weight of the Ikwerre nationality.

Regarding the group’s influence, Wike issued a firm reminder to political actors: “I’ve told everybody, you cannot ignore us. If you try that, at your own peril.”

The Minister noted that the Ikwerre people have transitioned from being overlooked to becoming a pivotal voice in national discussions. He cautioned that anyone who has benefited from the support of the Ikwerre people but intends to repay them with harm should be prepared for the consequences.

He specifically pointed to the critical role played by the four Ikwerre local government areas in securing President Bola Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential elections.

Wike expressed his pride in the group’s progress, stating: “Ikwerre ethnic nationality has come to stay, whether anybody likes it or not, we have come to stay. Before, they said Ikwerre people are nothing, now we are something. Now we talk to Nigeria, Nigeria will understand.”

He encouraged his kinsmen to capitalize on their current political momentum and maintain their unity. Asserting his commitment to the advancement of the region, he concluded: “So, don’t lose this opportunity. I know what is good for our people, and nobody can stop me from doing good for our people.”
