Idris Elba was among a host of celebrities who received honours at Windsor Castle today. On June 2, King Charles knighted the actor, activist and musician in an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. Elba, 53, received the honor of knighthood for services to young people.
King Charles, 77, tapped a sword on the actor’s shoulders as he knelt.
Elba’s knighthood was announced in King Charles’ 2026 New Year’s Honours list, and the moment was made official at the investiture ceremony today.
King Charles, Princess Anne and Prince William exclusively helm the ceremonies, handing out knighthoods, damehoods and other recognitions after lists of honorees are announced twice a year.
Idris has been championed for his community empowerment and devotion to educational projects.
He founded the Elba Hope Foundation in 2022, which promotes grassroots action and sustainable development.
The star is no stranger to royal accolades, having received a grant from the Prince’s Trust (now King’s Trust) at the age of 18 to attend the National Youth Music Theatre.
