Sir Shina Peters Claims He Has More Evergreen Songs Than Michael Jackson
Legendary Nigerian Juju musician Sir Shina Peters has sparked conversation after boldly claiming that he has produced more timeless songs than the late American pop superstar Michael Jackson.
Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the 67-year-old veteran emphasized that a musician’s greatest achievement lies not in fame or wealth, but in the creation of songs that remain relevant for generations.
“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced,” Sir Shina Peters stated. “To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two — ‘We Are the World’ and ‘Thriller.’ So, if I have four, I am accomplished.”
The remark has since stirred reactions among music lovers and industry observers, with some praising the Juju legend for his confidence, while others debated his comparison with one of pop music’s greatest icons.
Reflecting further, Sir Shina Peters lamented the current state of the Nigerian music industry, saying that many of the standards established by his generation have been “bastardised” by modern artists. He expressed concern that the emphasis on digital trends and instant fame has overshadowed the artistry, discipline, and depth that once defined Nigerian music.
Despite his criticism, the veteran acknowledged the talent of young musicians but urged them to prioritize quality and longevity in their work.
“Music should not just be about hits or streams,” he said. “It should be about legacy — what you will be remembered for when you’re gone.”
Sir Shina Peters, who began performing at the age of 10, is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Juju music, blending traditional Yoruba rhythms with high-energy instrumentation and contemporary influences. His groundbreaking album Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1), released in 1989, redefined the genre and cemented his place in Nigerian music history with classics like “Ijo Shina” and “Ace.”
Over the decades, his contributions have earned him numerous accolades and a lasting influence on the evolution of Afrobeat and other indigenous Nigerian sounds.
