Former One Direction member Liam Payne has tragically passed away at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, according to a police statement. The British singer was staying at the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighborhood of Argentina’s capital when he fell, resulting in fatal injuries.

Buenos Aires police stated that officers from the 14B Police Station were dispatched to the hotel after receiving a 911 call reporting a man exhibiting aggressive behavior, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Upon arrival, they discovered that Payne had fallen from the balcony of his room on the third floor. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, and medics confirmed that Payne had died instantly from the severe injuries sustained in the fall.

Pablo Policicchio, communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, confirmed in a statement that Payne had “jumped from the balcony” of his hotel room. The head of the state emergency medical system, Alberto Crescenti, told Todo Noticias TV that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death is ongoing, with an autopsy being conducted to determine further details.

Liam Payne had been open about his struggles with alcoholism in recent years. In July 2023, he posted a video on his YouTube channel revealing that he had been sober for six months following treatment. Despite his efforts to address his personal battles, Payne’s life was cut short by this tragic event. Representatives for the singer have not yet responded to inquiries regarding his passing.

Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Payne was the youngest of three children. He studied music technology at City of Wolverhampton College before rising to international fame as a member of the renowned boyband One Direction. Alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, Payne became a global sensation, contributing to the group’s success and massive fanbase.

Payne leaves behind a 7-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, whom he shared with his former girlfriend Cheryl, known as Cheryl Cole during her time in the pop group Girls Aloud.

Payne was also previously engaged to Maya Henry from August 2020 to early 2022. Earlier this year, Henry published a novel, which she said was inspired by their relationship.

In addition to his son, Liam Payne is survived by his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, and his two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola. His passing has left a profound impact on his fans, family, and the music industry, as the world mourns the loss of the talented singer who helped shape a generation of pop music.
