Former Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich Faces Renewed Scrutiny as UK Government Considers Legal Action
Roman Abramovich, former owner of Chelsea Football Club, is once again under the spotlight as the UK government has confirmed it is considering legal action in an ongoing dispute over the £2.5 billion proceeds from the club’s 2022 sale.
The British government is intensifying efforts to unlock the frozen funds, which were meant to be directed toward humanitarian relief for victims of the war in Ukraine. However, the money remains inaccessible due to disagreements with Abramovich, who was sanctioned in 2022 over alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy have expressed mounting frustration over the stalemate, stressing the urgent need to fulfill the original intention of using the funds to support those affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
Abramovich had agreed to sell Chelsea under the condition that the proceeds be used for humanitarian purposes. However, according to Sky News, a key point of contention has emerged over the definition of “victims.” Abramovich is reportedly advocating for a broader interpretation that may include individuals in Russia, a proposal that has delayed the fund’s release.
Legally, the money still remains under Abramovich’s name and cannot be redirected without his consent or the approval of a special license from the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI).
Reeves and Lammy have reaffirmed the government’s determination to ensure the funds reach Ukrainian victims as originally intended, warning that legal proceedings may be initiated if progress continues to stall.
The prolonged delay has sparked criticism from aid organizations and politicians alike, who argue that the humanitarian purpose behind the sale must be honored without further obstruction.
