Federal Government cancels 65th Independence Day parade
The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Day parade earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, as part of Nigeria’s 65th anniversary celebrations.
In a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the government clarified that the decision to call off the parade does not diminish the importance of the historic milestone. According to the statement, other commemorative activities lined up for the anniversary will proceed as planned.
While no detailed reasons were given for the cancellation, the government noted that the move was in line with current national priorities and ongoing reforms.
Nigerians were urged to continue to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it implements policies aimed at repositioning the nation for growth and stability.
“The government regrets any inconvenience caused by this change,” the statement read, emphasizing that the 65th Independence anniversary remains a moment of reflection and collective commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
This year’s anniversary is expected to feature a range of alternative events and programmes designed to highlight the nation’s achievements, honour its heroes, and engage citizens in nation-building conversations. Officials stressed that while the parade will not hold, the spirit of Independence Day remains undiminished.
