Team Nigeria’s basketball squad, D’Tigress, has significantly altered the country’s prospects at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

In their opening game of the competition, D’Tigress secured a remarkable victory over Australia, winning 75-62. The Nigerian team displayed dominant performance throughout the match, particularly in the first half, where they built a commanding lead. This win is especially notable given that Australia is currently ranked third in the world by the basketball federation.

Ezinne Kalu led Nigeria with 19 efficiency points, while Australia’s Ezi Magbegor contributed significantly with 6 rebounds. The game was intensely competitive, featuring multiple lead changes and ties.

Nigeria’s high-pressure defense caused Australia considerable trouble, with the Australian team struggling to advance the ball and ending up with a 41-28 deficit at halftime. Kalu was instrumental in this lead, scoring 17 of her total 19 points in the first half.

Australia’s Sami Whitcomb and Alanna Smith, who scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, sparked a comeback attempt with a 12-4 run at the start of the third quarter, narrowing the gap to within five points.

However, D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo’s crucial three-pointer in the final minutes extended Nigeria’s lead, ensuring their victory and bringing tears of joy from the team.

The match, held at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France, was a thrilling contest, showcasing the exceptional skills and determination of both teams.
