Davido Reveals He Almost Quit Music Before Smash Hit With You Featuring Omah Lay

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed that he nearly walked away from music before the release of his chart-topping single With You featuring Omah Lay.

The singer made the candid revelation in a recent interview that has since gone viral, shocking fans who have followed his remarkable 14-year journey in the industry.

Davido on Considering Retirement

According to Davido, the thought of quitting music weighed heavily on his mind as he entered his second decade in the spotlight. Despite a career filled with global hits, he admitted he was unsure of his next direction and felt the pressure of sustaining momentum in such a competitive industry.

That moment of uncertainty changed with With You, which turned out to be the standout track on his 5ive album. The collaboration with Omah Lay not only became the most streamed song on the project but also served as a major turning point for Davido personally.

“We thank God. Thirteen or fourteen years after, for me to have this kind of song, it’s rare,” Davido reflected. “Some people get this kind of record at the beginning of their career, some in the middle. I was actually thinking of bowing out, and then God blessed me with this kind of song. It definitely gave me more life.”

The Impact of With You

The record has since grown into one of the biggest Afrobeats anthems of 2025. With You is currently the number one most streamed Nigerian song on Spotify this year, cementing its global reach.

It has also:

  • Been nominated for Song of the Year at the 2025 AFRIMA Awards.

  • Topped the Official Nigeria Top 100 chart for several weeks.

  • Reached the top five on the Billboard US Afrobeats chart.

The song’s blend of Davido’s signature energy and Omah Lay’s soulful delivery has resonated widely, making it a defining anthem of the year.

A Career Defined by Resilience

For Davido, who has remained at the forefront of Afrobeats for more than a decade, the success of With You is more than just another accolade—it is a symbol of resilience and renewal.

Having faced personal and professional challenges along the way, Davido’s revelation underscores the pressures that come with long-term stardom. Yet, the hit single has not only revived his passion but has also reaffirmed his place as one of the genre’s most influential figures.

As With You continues to dominate charts worldwide, Davido’s story serves as a reminder that even in moments of doubt, music has the power to reignite purpose and inspire new chapters of greatness.
