Nigerian singer Chike opens up about faith, church, and a heartwarming gesture to a devoted fan

Nigerian singer Chike has shared candid insights into his personal relationship with faith, explaining why he no longer attends church, while also making headlines for a generous gesture toward one of his most dedicated fans.

In a recent interview, Chike recounted an awkward experience from years ago that influenced his decision to step away from church gatherings. He explained that during a visit to a church, the praise-and-worship leader happened to be someone he had a past relationship with. The unexpected encounter left him uneasy and unable to focus on the service.

“The lady leading praise and worship… we had history,” Chike revealed. “I was having flashbacks. She was praying, and I was just wondering what was happening.” The discomfort was so significant that Chike stopped attending the church after just a week. However, he emphasized that this decision did not equate to abandoning his belief in God.

Reflecting on his earlier career, Chike recalled relying heavily on prayer during challenging times. While living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend, he leaned on faith to navigate difficult circumstances. “I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me,” he shared.

He also spoke about a confusing episode shortly after releasing his debut album, when he accidentally consumed an extremely strong edible. “Three, four days into the album release, I didn’t even know where I was,” he said, highlighting the unpredictable challenges he has faced both personally and professionally.

Although Chike maintains a strong belief in God, he explained that the formal structure of church doesn’t align with his life. For him, faith is less about ritual and more about living ethically and treating people well. “You just need to do right by people,” he said, adding that he doesn’t feel compelled to adhere to strict definitions of Christian living.

Meanwhile, Chike recently captured public attention for a heartwarming gesture to a loyal fan. Following Spotify’s annual Wrapped report, a female listener named Ope revealed that Chike was her top artist of the year, logging an impressive 36,341 minutes of listening, placing her among his top 1% of fans.

Ope jokingly complained on Twitter that the singer had overlooked her dedication. Chike responded warmly, asking for her bank details with the playful message: “Good morning! Your bank, please!” While the exact amount he sent was not disclosed, the gesture delighted fans online. Many immediately shared their own Spotify stats, hoping for similar recognition from the singer.

Chike’s openness about his faith journey and his generosity toward fans underscore his authenticity and connection with his audience, highlighting a balance between personal belief, self-expression, and appreciation for those who support his music.
