Chelsea Begin Talks With Lyon’s Malick Fofana as Search for Sancho Replacement Intensifies

Chelsea Football Club have reportedly initiated discussions with French side Olympique Lyonnais over a potential transfer for highly rated winger Malick Fofana, as the London club continues its efforts to secure a suitable replacement for Jadon Sancho.

According to a report published by The Athletic on Monday, June 16, 2025, the Blues have formally inquired about the availability of the 20-year-old attacker. Fofana is now a key target as Chelsea look to bolster their attacking options before the close of the 2025 summer transfer window.

Who is Malick Fofana?

Malick Fofana is a young Belgian winger who made headlines following his move from KAA Gent to Olympique Lyon in January 2024. Since joining the Ligue 1 outfit, Fofana has made a significant impact, registering 11 goals and six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions during the 2024–25 season.

His speed, creativity, and ability to cut in from the flanks have attracted interest from several top European clubs, with Chelsea now emerging as serious contenders for his signature. He is currently under contract with Lyon until 2028.

Chelsea’s interest in Fofana comes amid their ongoing search to replace Jadon Sancho, who recently exited the club. The Blues had earlier attempted to secure a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, but negotiations stalled, and the transfer window closed on June 10, 2025, without a deal being finalized.

Despite that setback, Chelsea did manage to complete the signing of young striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town just before the tournament began. With Delap secured, the focus has now shifted back to reinforcing the wings, with Fofana seen as a prime candidate to fill the void left by Sancho’s departure.
