Chelsea Allegedly Finalizes Young Midfielder's Transfer
Chelsea Reportedly Secure Portuguese Midfielder Dário Essugo on Long-Term Deal
Chelsea have reportedly finalized the signing of Portuguese international Dário Essugo on a long-term contract, with the young midfielder set to join the club at the end of the season. The 20-year-old will remain at Sporting Lisbon for another season before making his move to Stamford Bridge in July 2026.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal via his official X account on Saturday, March 15, 2025. According to Romano, Chelsea’s board opted to sign Essugo as a reliable backup for Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo, ensuring depth in the squad’s midfield options.
Chelsea have agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon a fee of £18.5 million ($23.9 million) for Essugo’s services. The deal does not include any add-ons or sell-on clauses. Reports suggest that both parties have agreed on a seven-year contract, further solidifying the club’s long-term vision for the player.
Essugo, who is currently on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas, has made 17 La Liga appearances during the 2024-25 season. The defensive midfielder made history in 2021 when he debuted for Sporting Lisbon at just 16 years old, becoming the club’s youngest-ever player. Since then, he has accumulated 25 first-team appearances for the Portuguese giants.
The Blues are currently positioned fourth in the Premier League and will return to action after the international break, hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in what promises to be a crucial fixture in their season.
