Cannes Film Festival Bans Revealing Outfits from Red Carpet for the Sake of Decency
Organizers of the Cannes Film Festival have introduced a ban on overly revealing outfits at the annual ceremony, following years of attention-grabbing red carpet appearances.
The new guidelines, introduced “for the sake of decency,” will take effect during the opening ceremony featuring French director Amélie Bonnin’s Leave One Day. According to festival organizers, the move aims to curb the growing trend of ultra-sheer and highly suggestive ensembles—commonly referred to as “naked dresses”—that leave little to the imagination.
“For reasons of decency, excessively revealing attire is not permitted on the red carpet or in any other area of the festival,” states an official Cannes Festival document. “Festival staff will be required to deny red carpet access to anyone who fails to comply with these rules.”
The iconic venue now embraces a more traditional dress code. Preferred attire includes suits, tuxedos, and floor-length evening gowns, rather than eye-catching or provocative fashion choices.
Classic black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, stylish tops, and elegant sandals—whether flat or heeled—will also be accepted.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival will be held at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière and will feature a weeklong lineup of high-profile film screenings and events in Cannes.
