Arsenal has confirmed the appointment of 53-year-old Italian Andrea Berta as their new Sporting Director, replacing Edu, who stepped down last November after five years in the role.

Berta, who departed Atletico Madrid in January after more than a decade, was reportedly close to joining Arsenal earlier this month. During his tenure at Atletico, the club won two La Liga titles, the Europa League, and twice finished as Champions League runners-up.

Expressing his excitement, Berta said:
“I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal during such an exciting time for the club. I have closely followed Arsenal’s progress in recent years and admired the effort put into restoring the club as a major force in European football. Arsenal has great values and a rich history, and I look forward to contributing to its success. I can’t wait to get started and experience my first match at the Emirates with our incredible supporters.”

Arsenal Co-Chair Josh Kroenke praised Berta’s appointment, stating:
“Andrea is a highly respected figure in football, known for his extensive knowledge, strong network, and commitment to building winning teams. He aligns with Arsenal’s values, and we are confident he will help us take the next steps toward major trophies. We conducted a thorough recruitment process and were impressed by many candidates, but Andrea’s experience and track record made him the standout choice. We look forward to welcoming him into the Arsenal family.”

The selection process was led by Managing Director Richard Garlick and Executive Vice-Chair Tim Lewis, with input from Kroenke and Manager Mikel Arteta. Assistant Sporting Director Jason Ayto, who had been filling the role on an interim basis since Edu’s departure, was also considered for the position.
