Four Israeli soldiers were killed, and over 60 individuals were injured following a drone attack launched by Hezbollah on a military base in the central-northern region of Israel, according to reports from first responders and the Israeli military.

The attack, which took place late on Sunday night, October 13, marks one of the deadliest assaults against Israel since the onset of the conflict earlier this month. The incident underscores the escalating violence in the region, with Hezbollah’s involvement raising tensions further amid the ongoing war.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, treating those injured, many of whom were soldiers stationed at the targeted base. The strike highlights the increasing use of drone warfare and its devastating impact on military and civilian populations alike.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that a drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), launched by Hezbollah struck a military base near Binyamina, a town located north of Tel Aviv, about 40 miles from Israel’s border with Lebanon.

In addition to the four soldiers who lost their lives in the attack, seven others sustained severe injuries, according to the IDF. Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service reported that a total of 61 individuals were wounded in the assault.

Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it was in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon last Thursday that resulted in the deaths of 22 people and left 117 injured, as confirmed by the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Hezbollah also claimed that the target of the drone strike was the Golani Brigade, a highly regarded infantry unit within the IDF, which has been actively deployed in southern Lebanon. The group’s declaration of responsibility followed the release of an audio message from its former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, urging members to defend their people, nation, values, and dignity.

Earlier on Sunday, the IDF reported the interception of a UAV launched from Lebanon, although it was unclear whether it was linked to the later attack.

Hezbollah stated that the drone strike was part of a broader operation in which it fired dozens of rockets towards the northern Israeli towns of Nahariya and Acre to engage Israel’s air defense systems. Simultaneously, they launched a swarm of drones.

According to Hezbollah, these drones penetrated Israel’s radar defenses without detection and successfully hit the Golani Brigade’s training facility in Binyamina.

The incident, which took place late Sunday night, further heightens tensions in the ongoing conflict and demonstrates Hezbollah’s increasing use of advanced aerial tactics against Israeli targets. The attack occurred just hours after Hezbollah announced it had launched a swarm of attack drones targeting the same IDF infantry camp in Binyamina.

The IDF’s chief spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, stated that the military would conduct a thorough investigation into how the drone managed to evade detection and strike the base without triggering an alarm.

“We will learn from and investigate the incident,” Hagari said in a video statement delivered from the base. He acknowledged that the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been a persistent challenge since the start of the conflict.

“The threat of UAVs is a threat we are dealing with since the beginning of the war. We need an improvement to our defense,” he added, emphasizing the need for enhanced defense measures against such attacks.
